By Tom Dienhart - More on Morgantown: Robbery on campus!
Morgantown wasn't the only place coaches invaded in their quest for knowledge this offseason.
Gainesville, Fla.
Florida always is a popular winter destination, but Bill Belichick didn't pack suntan lotion for his visit; the Patriots coach was sharing general coaching ideas with Florida coach Urban Meyer and picking Meyer's brain on prospects. The Gators also were happy to welcome West Virginia, with Meyer looking to refine a spread scheme that some believe can't be run at a championship level in the SEC. Defensive staffs from Ohio State, Maryland, Utah and the Denver Broncos also were in town looking for tips. They like Florida's pressure packages and ability to stop the run.
Columbus
The natives are buzzing along High Street with serious national title talk. No one has to tell that to Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel. He dispatched coaches to Gainesville, Fla., and Clemson, S.C., in addition to Morgantown. The goal: Glean ideas on how to augment Ohio State's spread packages to improve an offense loaded with playmakers, particularly quarterback Troy Smith. The Buckeyes are most intrigued by how West Virginia, Clemson and Florida run out of their spread formations. It's all about keeping foes guessing -- and fans dreaming.
Tucson, Ariz.
Joe Glenn had members of his Wyoming staff check out the aggressive 4-3 scheme Mike Stoops runs in the desert. Why? Because the Cowboys' defense ranked 61st in the nation last season.
State College, Pa.
Who wouldn't want to be like JoePa? Southern Miss coach Jeff Bowers commissioned staff members to study how the Nittany Lions altered their offensive scheme with Michael Robinson at the controls.
Oxford, Miss.
Southern California's secondary and defensive line coaches visited with Rebels coach Ed Orgeron, a former Trojans assistant.
Houston & Cleveland
Arkansas sought higher powers to improve its defense. Secondary coach Louis Campbell and cornerbacks coach Bobby Allen went to the Texans' digs, and assistant Tracy Rocker was dispatched to study the Browns' D-line.
DeKalb, Ill.
Michigan State sent coaches to Northern Illinois for a two-day clinic; the Spartans like how the Huskies' defense pursues the ball and creates big plays from a 4-3 set.
College Station, Texas Oregon wants to get the most from quarterback Dennis Dixon's athleticism. That's why the Ducks had coaches checking out how the Aggies used Reggie McNeal out of spread formations. Pittsburgh Who ya gonna call when your defense ranks 117th in the nation? The Pittsburgh Steelers. That's what Northwestern coach Randy Walker did. He wanted his assistants to learn some of the Steelers' blitz packages and secondary techniques. Provo, Utah True, BYU isn't known for defense, but that didn't stop West Virginia from traveling west to study film. The reason: The Cougars run the same funky 3-5-3 scheme as the Mountaineers.
