Cyclone Glenda Approaches Australia:Posted By: Janine Delacroix Cyclone Glenda was downgraded from a maximum Category 5 storm late Wednesday, but was still expected to pack winds of up to 155 mph and wreak havoc along Western Australia's Pilbara coastline, home to few major towns but many large mining complexes. "We are asking people to stay indoors and to seek shelter," said Jim Cahill, an operations manager with the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia. Danielle Nazarri, the president of the local Roebourne Shire, said the storm was traveling faster than expected and would likely hit the coast Thursday afternoon near the mining town of Karratha, about 620 miles north of the state capital Perth. "I have a feeling that we're going to get a bit more of a walloping than we first anticipated," she told Sky News. About 14,000 people live in Karratha, and another 1,200 live in nearby Dampier, where one of Western Australia's major iron ore ports shut down operations Wednesday. About 160 people had evacuated from their homes, taking shelter at a local college, officials said. Cyclone Glenda is the sixth cyclone to threaten the Western Australia coast during this year's cyclone season, which runs from November to April. Glenda comes just over a week after Category 5 Cyclone Larry battered Queensland state on the east coast with 180 mph winds, devastating farming towns and flattening banana and sugar cane plantations. Insurance claims for Larry have reached $177 million, authorities said Tuesday. Courtesy Of: Yahoo!
