Two UCSD Students Killed, One Man Injured In Car Crash:

Posted By: Mark Smith

Two UCSD students were killed and another person was seriously injured Friday when a speeding vehicle crashed on a roadway in University City, authorities said.

The accident occurred on Genesee Avenue near Centurion Square around 2:35 a.m., according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher.

Three men were in a 2001 BMW sedan traveling northbound on Genesee Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and the car hit a center divider, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The car then overturned and struck a tree, throwing 22-year-old Sachin Shah onto the roadway and killing him instantly, said Investigator Michael Ellano of the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. Shah wasn't wearing a seat belt, he said.

The car continued into the southbound lanes of Genesee Avenue, where it came to a stop, turning upright. The impact of the crash killed the driver, 23-year-old Anish Dhingra, Ellano said.

The third victim, who was sitting in the back seat, was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the investigator said.

Both the driver and the third victim were wearing seat belts, Ellano said.

Genesee Avenue between Centurion Square and Governor Drive was closed while authorities investigated the crash. All lanes were re-opened at 8 a.m., police said.
