George Michael gets police warning in pot case:Posted By: William "Bill" Buckington PlanetOut Network SUMMARY: The pop star gets a formal caution in London over last month's marijuana arrest; he avoids prosecution but could have trouble visiting the U.S.Pop singer George Michael received a formal caution from London police Wednesday after being arrested last month for drug possession. The gay 42-year-old star was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car after police were alerted by a concerned citizen. He was arrested on suspicion of holding Class C drugs, which include marijuana, tranquilizers and painkillers. One of the two drug charges was later dropped, according to Life Style Extra, because one of the substances in his possession turned out to be amyl nitrate, which is legal in Britain. The other substance was marijuana. Under British law, a police caution is a formal warning given to an adult who has admitted guilt for an offense and could have been charged or prosecuted, according to the Deputy Prime Minister's office. It is only given for minor or less serious offenses, but can factor into a person's sentencing if he or she is convicted of another crime. The punishment, which Michael accepted during a meeting with police Wednesday morning, could cause difficulty in traveling to the United States, where officials can deny visas for drug arrests. At the time of his arrest last month, the singer complied with authorities and called the incident "my own stupid fault." Michael was previously busted by police in Los Angeles in 1998 for a "lewd act" in a public restroom in a Beverly Hills park. The singer, who sold more than 80 million records worldwide during a 25-year career, said in November he was planning a civil partnership ceremony with Kenneth Goss, his partner of 10 years.
